According to a new analysis of previously published studies singing, playing instruments or even just listening to music can reduce anxiety in cancer patients and improve the overall quality of their lives.

The study reported that music-based therapy also appears to have beneficial effects on the level of pain, mood, and certain vital signs (such as blood pressure) and can be used as complementary medicines and other standard treatments.

Lead researcher Joke Bradt, Ph.D., a professor of creative arts therapy at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania said, "I strongly believe that the beauty of music can bring new hope to patients and their loved ones and can strengthen their" Singing or can also play music. "empowering" for patients who feel victimized by cancer, Bradt added.

Bradt and his colleagues systematically reviewed 30 studies on music therapy for cancer that included 1891 adults and children with cancer. The results are published in the Cochrane Library.

In 17 studies, people listen pre-recorded music. The remaining participants in the study took part in a variety of music guided therapy, which in some cases including singing, playing piano or creating a rhythm with the therapist. All the studies included a control group who received standard cancer treatment.

The results showed that the two sessions with a music therapist and pre-recorded music reduces patient anxiety levels and quality of life better than standard treatment. In some studies, music therapy also increases the pain and mood (though not the level of depression), as well as blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate.
